Some new birthday card ideas
It’s my mum’s birthday on the 30th (not-so lucky her, being born so close to Christmas) so I needed a nice card for her.
I tried a couple of different ideas that evolved from a couple of old magazines I had (I have a quite a collection of magazines to look through now when I need a little inspiration).
The first one was a card with vellum feathers that had a fab mix of colours – blue, yellow and pink with a dash of glittery gold. I drew up something inspired by that in Silhouette.
A very simple card with three cut feathers, a strip of pattern paper (from a First Edition pack) and then a dash of gold at the bottom. Once I pulled it together though the gold didn’t look quite right (maybe I used too large a strip, I’m not sure) so I replaced it with some pink Kirstie Allsop washi instead. Then I finished it all off with a Pebbles sentiment sticker.
I love the mix of colours in this and how well the feathers were cut out. I curled the edges of the feathers slightly and only used a couple of glue dots on each one so they weren’t just flat to the card. The pink tape might not be to everyone’s taste but I felt without it the card wouldn’t look quite finished.
For my second card I’d seen a tutorial in a magazine for some lovely ombre butterfly box art and wanted to take that idea and turn it into a card. First I cut out a selection of pink butterflies and then got a little stumped. The original idea was the butterflies in the shape of a heart but my card size wasn’t quite big enough to accommodate such a design. Instead I picked out a complementary paper (First Edition again) and decided to try something out on Silhouette.
This is what would be cut out on my paper – the idea was to have white butterflies on one side and on the other, the ombre pink butterflies.
The happy birthday is two Pebbles sentiment stickers cut up and the enamel dots are from two different My Mind’s Eye sets. The butterflies are just glue dotted in the middle so there’s some movement/3d effect to them. I love how all the different ombre effects come together!
I decided on this one for my mum and finished it off inside with a stamp:
The stamp is from the Me to You Mother’s Day set and the ink is Staz On (my new favourite ink).
I’m really happy with these cards! The first one is in the shop now if you like it and I’ll working on some more of the second design for the shop soon.
What do you think?
