New Watercolour Cards

I made these cards ages ago and only now am I getting around to writing about them.

It’s reminded me how much I love the concept and I think I’m going to set aside some time at the weekend to refine the idea and make some more.

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll have seen me showing off some new watercolour paints. I’d been looking at watercolours for ages. I finally bit the bullet a few months ago. Now I have three palettes (oops). I’ve been picking them up every so often and having a little play. One such time I decided to try and use them to create a background, and then stamp a sentiment over the top.

I was nicely surprised with how much I ended up liking the idea.

The lines came out so wonky! Probably a little too wonky to give to anyone but it got the creative juices flowing. I really like the colour combination here but I have just purchased a full watercolour palette so I’ll have a little more freedom in the colours I choose next time. My favourite part about this card though is the stamp. I picked it up on a whim in a little stamp shop I found in York earlier in the year and it’s perfect for this kind of card.

While the card blank I used could take the watercolour paints I think I’ll try these again with better cardstock, mounted onto the card blank. I think I might be able to make it neater by doing that. By painting on the cardstock and then chopping the ends off for a neat edge, for instance. I’m brimming with ideas about things I can do to improve this design, I just need some time to sit down and do it.

Next I went for something a little more basic.

I’m not as much of a fan of this one. I don’t like the one colour idea. Looks too plain. It could work as a gift tag, but not a card. I also had an issue with the Avery Elle stamp, which accidentally created a cool effect. The first stamp didn’t take very well so I had to stamp over it again. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the location the same so it’s got a little 3d effect to it. I like it but I’d never be able to repeat it!

I enjoyed having some creative time, trying out something new and I definitely need to do more of it. As a crafter it’s easy to place way too much emphasis on anything I create being perfect first time that I sometimes lose the fun of just playing. Does anyone else find that?
